The Aware = In-Ear Revolution?

Let’s talk about The Aware, this interesting project on Kickstarter that promises a revolution in the headphones world.

What if you could buy a wireless in-ear headphone,custom-fit, with biometric sensors, that track stress, brain activity and monitor your sleep cycles, that does not cost thousands of dollars? That is the core of the proposal of this innovative project, however, the technology behind these is what really caught my attention and I want to share with you what I think about this project.

The Aware

As I said, this project is basically a custom-fit headphone with a lot of sensors and functionalities, but some functionalities are new to me on a headphone and really make the difference when you want to innovate.

One of the things I found interesting here, is the eFit 3D scanner that scans your ear with an accurate ring laser and translates that scan into a 3D model in real time. It really has the potential to provide an almost perfect fit.

There is not much talk about the actual sound quality they will provide, but they can customize the placement and angle of each speaker inside the headphone, which is a great improvement from standard models and will deliver a customized experience to you. They also say that you will have the ability to tune into your surroundings, for better situational awareness, but I am not sure of how this will work, so as soon as I have a better understanding of this, I’ll update this part.

Sensors and Functionalities

Activity Tracking – Like a smartwatch, you will be able to track your heart rate, calories burned, steps, distance, etc. You will also be able to set goals and notifications, but this should not act a lot different than actual alarms on the phone.

Focus – This headphone can track beta waves of your brain that are associated with focus and alertness, meaning if you lose focus on the activity you are executing, the aware will trigger an audible alert to help you focus again! For me ,this is by far the best functionality, and will help with many things if it work properly.

Stress Again by tracking your brainwaves, you can monitor your stress level and understand better the causes behind it.

Sleep – You can also monitor your sleeping patterns through brainwaves and measure the quality of your sleep. I wouldn’t sleep with headphones but since these are custom fit, it might not be a problem at all.

And of course,in order to use all these functionalities and keep record of your data, you will need a smartphone.

The Aware is a bold project and I am sure that if it works as good as it sounds, (and I really hope it does) it will be a huge success. If you are interested, you can check out more details at Kickstarter, and if you can afford it, help them achieve their goal of $100,000.
